The formula changedI have been using this for quite some time (since 2/2016) and the quality has been excellent and consistent. I never had to update the color and my hair has been even. Then the box changed and with that the hair color. The quality of the color and supplies (even the font) has significantly decreased. It is like it is a knock off of the former version. I wanted to give the new formula a few tries but no... There is a clear line in my hair color from the previous colorings and this new version. So disappointed. I am now looking for an alternative after being happy with this product for over two years and many colorings. Hair color looked nothing like the photos, advice - ask lots of questions!Unfortunately I had a bad experience with my hair color. I would say this had the same effect as a box dye, no idea what you're going to get until you dye your hair. Learn from my mistakes and make sure to do a test strand. A few notes for anyone wanting to use this service: - Make sure you only want DARKER hair color if you use this service. Despite the pictures on their website you will NOT have lighter hair at the end of this. The color I got was at least 3 shades darker than the photos and 1 or 2 shades darker than my original hair color. - Utilize the color experts advice! They really are consultative and friendly. Before you order your color I would even encourage you to get on the phone with them and send inspiration pictures to get exactly what you want. Ask questions to see if the result you want is achievable using the box. - I can't stress this enough, ask questions. my hair process for my ends was only 5 mins, so I reached out and asked if that was correct or not. They said to increase to 10 mins processing on my ends (which still ended up not being enough time and I had splotchy results) all to say treat this like you would talking to a stylist at a salon. After my negative experience with the hair color I do have to say the hair experts on the customer service team are really great, explaining everything in a really friendly way and are very transparent and consultative. Overall I'd say if you want professional results you'll still need to go to a salon. No shine and roughMy favorite is L’Oréal ferai. I thought I would give this a shot. The mixture is stronger unbearable smell, the color was dull and texture of my hair got rough with the color bleeding every wash, and even worse was my scalp was so itchy for weeks after this. I sent two email to cancel this subscription but there’s another charged to me on my way. Color ok... makes my hair very dryThe first time I used the product the feel of my hair was very odd and concerning. But I got through and decided I liked the color. Tried 2 more times to do the roots and my hair feels dry and less healthy than before. I've colored my hair for years... so I'm not new to this. I have A Lot of hair. The tiny shampoo and conditioner does absolutely nothing and maybe covers a third of my hair. As I said. The color is fine. The worst haircolor ever!I used my color box last week. As soon as I opened the color, it smelled of unbearable ammonia. I still wanted to go ahead and try it. Heres what happened 1. I left the color on my hair for 30 mins and went for a wash 2. My hair felt extremely greasy and the grease wouldnt wash off 3. IT was so bad, that my hair remained in the shape that I make out if it!!! 4. It took me 3 showers washing my hair to make my hair look human enough! 5. The color ran over my face and when I was out of the shower, I was brown!!!!!!!! 6. I had to use the Stain remover provided to get my skin to the normal color 7. Within 2 days, my roots were back to grey! Ive never had such a horrible experience even with cheap off-counter stuff. Wrong color twiceMy first order I told them I wanted my hair to be dark brown. (My hair is naturally dark brown and it was currently a medium brown with blond highlights) Used their mixture once it arrived...my hair was RED! Contacted them they sent me a new mixture...dyed my hair again about 12 weeks later...this item it was like a light brown/red color. NOT impressed with their ability to mix colors properly! So Disappointed 😔I was so looking forward to this- customer service/stylist help seemed excellent prior to receiving my color. I have colored my own hair off and on for 15 years using inexpensive box dye from the store as well as alternating with extremely expensive professional color/highlights. This has by far been the worst experience with hair color I’ve ever had. I followed the directions step by step and did not skip any (and I’ve NEVER had issues with coloring my hair in the past. EVER.) The color is uneven despite being provided two bottles of color/developer and my hair is only shoulder length. There are spots of my roots that are a completely different bright color than the rest of my hair, and the main part of my hair that I was supposed to only leave the dye on for 5 minutes, despite making sure the hair was saturated - came out completely uneven. I spent over a half hour rinsing my hair having followed the directions to let it rinse until the water ran clear, then did the shampoo twice and conditioner. My hair feels like it’s coated in something awful. I rerinsed it again for another 10 minutes in my sink and it’s still coated.. Too dark!I was really expecting something less brown/dark and more red... Unexpectedly went darker. The product itself is great (thus the 3 stars) but really disappointed in how dark it is. I wish I could return itI gave this color a try because I could never seem to get my color right after my fav color was discontinued and others just didn't match. I gave explicit instructions on what hair color I liked. Uploaded a picture of the exact hair color I wanted. Even added the brand, name, and number of the discounted color for reference since it can still be viewed online. What I asked for was Strawberry Blonde. What I got was some red brown that doesn't even look close to my natural color. On top of all of this their shampoo or conditioner or both has made my hair sticky no matter how many times I've rinsed it. Completely disappointed in this and now I have to head to Sally's Beauty Supply to get bleach so I can completely ruin my already fragile had and what 6 weeks to dye it back a color that is as close as I can get to natural. Color was too light at the roots.The kits were very nicely put together and when the color was not right before, they tried to correct the issue. Good deal at firstHmmm...ok well this was certainly a good deal at first. $10 for a kit that was very generous with 2 bottles for my roots and 2 for my ends which really helped because of my long hair. But $10 quickly became $30 and 4 bottles became only 2. ☹ I honestly don't think the quality of the dye was any better than one I could get at Walgreens and this was more expensive. And then there is the fact that they charge you for the product 2 weeks before they send your product. I didn't like that. DisappointedWhen I applied my color this time I noticed it looked darker than I remembered it in the first two deliveries. As I styled my hair, I saw that it was definitely darker and appeared "muddy", lacking the rich red tones of the previous sets. I have since washed and conditioned my hair twice, hoping that the drabness was due to color residue but no improvement. I reached out to eSalon for assistance on Monday of this week. I had previously been satisfied with eSalon's response times (1-2 days), but it has now been four days and I have heard nothing back other than the confirmation that my request had been received. COLOR WAS COMPLETELY OFFI have been dying my hair a very light auburn for years now. Even though I was very hesitant to veer off from my usual dye brand, I decided to give ESALON a try based on their "expertise" and customer reviews. I uploaded a picture of myself so they could do their best to match my color. What I ended up receiving was a BRIGHT, MERMAID, FIRE red that is completely off from my normal color. I couldn't belive how drastic the outcome was. I could understand if it was NEAR my normal shade in my original picture, but this was FAAAAARRR off. I had to go to the store to buy color oops just so I could strip it out!! It's unfortunate because I was very hopeful this program could work for me, but that's just the risk of trying it out. I was hoping I could post my before picture and after picture to show it better, but I don't see an option to do that. On another note, applying the product was very easily and gentle on my hair compared to other products. Too Dark, What Shine?The shade I received was at least a shade or two darker than it looked online, and the rinse/massage step for extra shine did nothing. I've gotten far more shine from cheap drugstore brands. I won't recommendPros: great price, easy to follow direction, covered most of my grays, my hair felt soft after. Cons: my hair wasn't the color I wanted. I ordered intense pearl which is a brown with a hint of violet. My hair turned dark brown with some parts near the roots that turned lighter than others. When I called to Stop the monthly shipment I was informed that they would be billing me regardless. The worst possible experienceIf it was possible I would rate negative- no stars! I have light brown hair color with all over gray to cover. I made it clear that I wanted to stay light brown hair color, with total gray coverage, not lighter, not darker. I received and used my first -custom color- My hair is now black! Not the color I wantedI finally colored my hair today. I wanted to cover the grey's and brighten/keep my existing natural color of hair. The color darkened my hair so much. Penny LaneMy hair started out blonde. I said that I was only coloring my roots. I followed the instructions to the letter. I ended up with copper (the color of pennies) roots. It was a disaster. I couldn't get to my hairdresser right away so I tried stripping out the color with head and shoulders and crushed vitamin c. I had to get an ash toner after that. Then I had to go to my hairdresser and spend over $100 to get my hair back to blonde. Please cancel my subscription ASAP and send me a letter confirming that no other color will be sent and there will be no further charges to my account. My hair turned pink - HorribleHorrible. The stylist Sabrina changed my formula without asking and sent me a color end refresher. It was a completely different formula than what I was using. The formula I used previously was the color I wanted. I asked for more color as my hair did not get a complete application the first time around. Terrible colorI loved this company at first. I was so excited to have a custom hair color delivered to my door for a reasonable price. The process was easy with no trip to the salon necessary. With that being said the products are not consistent. The first few colors were spot on then they kept going down hill. Each time I thought it next time will be right after the third time of a completely wrong color I canceled my subscription. Hair is dry & grayI love the branding and efficiency of E Salon and have been excited to receive the personalized boxes each month. Unfortunately, it has left my hair very dry and the hair color doesn’t absorb well into my hair leaving it gray in areas I spend focused time dying. 2nd hair coloringAbsolutely do not like. The first time I thought it was great a pretty mahogany color. This time, it looks like an ugly dark brown and when I first washed it out, my hair felt like I had glue in it. Hair is super dark now :(I ordered a medium golden brown color and unfortunately my hair is fully dark brown now. I washed it the fourth time to see if the color would fade, but unfortunately it didn't reach the Golden tone I usually get by using Feria. It did cover the greys better than the other one I'm used to. But I don't like my hair dark and I've been keeping it lighter for years. I wish there was a way to fix it before my wedding. Too much money too little returnColor is muddy and does not last. If not left for at least twenty minutes over the recommended time, new growth is completely untouched. When it does color, instead of an intense copper I get a muddy old tarnished penny color. What am I paying 27 bucks for? Not at all satisfied. In fact In general I’m really ticked. Be Careful!So, to anyone who has virgin hair and is looking for a demi-permanent color: don’t be surprised if it’s not what you expected. I recently ordered a red-copper shade that ended up being more of a slight red tint than anything, and that was a bit disappointing. However, my hair feels very soft and nice, and i reached out to customer service to see if there’s anything i can do to get it closer to what i wanted. Fumes too strong, but great results.The ammonia fumes are scary. I inhaled too much while rinsing in the sink (I can't use the shower). Also, this is a messy activity if you aren't good at doing your own hair - separating into 4 quarters, pinning, applying solution, unpinning, reapplying, repinning.... just too much pinning and unpinning while working with the wet hair color. My final pinning must have looked rediculous because I could barely get the hair stay up in the pins. However, after all was done, it did look great. Note I did not have a sticky, gunky film of residue like others mentioned. I did have hair dye spots still on my scalp that I had to scratch off, and hair dye got on my arms and face. I used a makeup removing cloth to clean it off my arms and face. Also, and very important, my instructions recommended I use leftover solution in my final rise, which nearly killed me with fumes in the sink. Don't do this. For the short time frame this leftover dye is in contact with your hair there wouldn't be a benefit, and not worth the horrid blast of fumes. Just rinse it out with water and then wash your hair.
