8 Ways To Get Happy (And Beautiful) Hair

by on

If your hair is your favorite accessory (and who can blame you if it is!), we understand you want to keep it in tip-top shape from morning to night. But be warned that if you don’t treat it right, it can end up falling flat before you’ve hit the afternoon.

The good news is that it’s not that hard to keep your hair looking healthy all the time – but you do have to give it the right attention to keep it happy all day. Simple things like changing your regular styling product or updating your daily shampoo can make a huge difference in the life of your hair.

Here are 8 helpful tips our stylists suggest to make your hair more healthy (and beautiful) every day. Because when your hair’s healthy, it won’t fight against you in the bathroom every morning!

1. Don’t forget to shampoo your hair. Even those of you with very dry hair still need to shampoo every now and then to remove the oil and dirt from your scalp. Letting those oils build up can irritate your scalp and potentially stunt your hair growth. So try to wash it at least once a week, and follow up with a conditioner or leave-in conditioner to soak it with moisture.

2. Keep your hair covered when you’re in the sun. UV rays from the sun can damage and weaken hair that’s been colored or processed (and speeds up color fading). Just remember to wear a hat, or use a UV-blocking leave-in conditioner to protect your locks.

3. Don’t over brush your hair. Yes, there’s an old rumor that 100 brushstrokes twice a day will make your hair shiny – but it’s just a rumor. Actually, the more you brush your hair, the more you damage the hair cuticle and increase frizziness. Plus, it tears at your scalp and causes hair to break more. That doesn’t sound like a way to keep your hair healthy (or shiny). Instead, treat your hair with care by using a wide-toothed comb to detangle it (and be gentle!).

4. Take care of your split ends. Hair breakage and splitting ends are generally bound to happen to everyone at some point. A variety of regular styling techniques contribute: over shampooing, over styling with heated tools, chemical treatments, the list goes on. But you can put up a strong defense by washing with a moisturizing shampoo and deep conditioner – then rinse with cool water to seal down the cuticle. Finally, detangle your hair with a wide-toothed comb that will be gentler on delicate strands. And don’t forget to get a trim regularly – that’s the easiest way to make split ends vanish.

5. If you really must use heated styling tools, make sure you’re protecting your hair from the heat. For blow drying, first towel dry your hair as much as you can before firing up the heat. Then use a heat-protecting product on your hair to minimize heat damage. Finally, hold the dryer as far from your hair as possible and keep the heat moving so it doesn’t scorch your hair.

6. Don’t let frizzy hair get the best of you. Hair frizzes up in heat and humidity, when your dry, porous hair absorbs the moisture in the air and sticks up all over the place. You may be surprised to learn that aging can also cause frizzy hair – when you get older, you scalp becomes drier and the hair changes texture. But you can counteract the frizz by using a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner – and use a nice deep conditioner once a week to really boost up the moisture. You can also use an anti-humectant pomade to help seal up the cuticle and keep hair de-frizzed.

7. Flyaway hairs will invariably do their best to ruin your hair style. If you keep finding strands that just won’t stay put, it may mean you have cuticle damage that’s exposing the inner hair fibers. This inner part of the hair reacts to static more than usual, so it often makes the hair stick up. An easy solution to keeping hair in line is by coating it with a leave-in conditioner and brushing through with a natural-bristle brush.

8. Although everyone loses about 50-100 strands of hair per day, but you can take an active part in minimizing further loss. Eat a well-balanced diet that supports healthy hair growth – nutrients like protein, iron, vitamin E and D are all incredibly helpful in growing a full head of hair. Also stay away from harsh treatments, like chemical relaxers and perms, and tight hairstyles that pull on the roots – they’ll only add to your daily hair loss.
